De Nederlandse stoomboot “Alkaid” liep op 5 november aan de grond bij Sourdaras (Petit Canoubier). Het torentje van “Canoubier” (1833) is een herkenningspunt in de Middellandse Zee ten westen van de Vieux-Port van Marseille.

Scheepswerf: RDM. 
Opdrachtgever: van Nievelt, Goudriaan en Co, Rotterdam. 
Tonnage: 3028 brt, 5200 dwt, 7217 twvp. 
Hoofdafmetingen: Loa = 99,30 m, B = 14,34 m, H = 7,32 m. 
Voortstuwing: RDM triple-expansie stoommachine, 3 cilinders, 1200 ipk, 990 apk, snelheid 8-9 kn.

Historie:
Tewaterlating op 22 januari 1910 en op 10 maart 1910 opgeleverd aan van Nievelt, Goudriaan & Co te Rotterdam. 
Op 04-01-1916 redde het schip opvarenden van het s.s. “Leto” van Van Nievelt, Goudriaan & Co (RDM-043), dat op de Noordzee ten zuiden van het lichtschip “Galloper” op een door de Duitse onderzeeboot “UC 10” gelegde mijn liep en daarna zonk. 
In maart 1918 in de haven van New York in beslag genomen door de USA. In het voorjaar van 1919 terug gegeven aan de eigenaar. Op 21 mei 1919 arriveerde het schip weer in Rotterdam. 
Op 1 februari 1926, tijdens een zeer zware storm gedurende een reis van Hull naar Philadelphia, is het schip op 360 mijl ten oosten van Cape Race gezonken. De bemanning werd gered door het Duitse s.s. “Westphalia”.
